The project “2x2 Windows” is a collaboration between Vietnamese multimedia composer Tam Thi Pham, Japanese dancer Minori Sumiyoshiyama. It is an improvised networked music and dance performance project.
During the Covid-19 pandemic our mobility is limited and it’s difficult to meet each other. We all suffer this lack of freedom, so people have experimented with many different modi of online-performances. Are these online-performances just makeshift-substitutes for the real-life events? Or, will the necessities of our "new normal" survive and give rise to more diverse and advanced online-performances?
For artists like us, who live in different areas, online collaboration frees us from geographical constraints. We have been testing different approaches since May this year, overcoming the time difference between Hamburg and Yokohama and technical issues with video and audio streamings. Our experiment in creating a new online platform is still in progress, but from the end of August 2020, we would like to open the creative process and share our experiences and our journey through this digital world with you - our audience.
"Good improvisation is about listening reacting in the moment, creating and supporting the idea of others"
- Tom Yorton -
The piece is a commission for “Misch Masch festival” - a dance festival focused on the multicultural society of NPO DANCE BOX in Japan. “In-” explores various modi of perception and can be watched, but not listened to, listened but not watched, or both listened and watched - the imagination, however, is always present. This creates an area of equality between the members of the audience, as the piece speaks to all. The YouTube version, due to the constraints of the medium, offers 3 different instructions. In the installation setting we would prefer to keep it more open, and allow the audience to follow or ignore our instructions. These are:
Close your eyes, imagine a dance inspired by the music.
Close your ears, imagine the music inspired by the video
Dance, inspired by what you see or hear.
The piece has two version:
version 01 was show in the NPO DANCE BOX
versio 02 was show in the "Indonesian Dance festival" (IDF) with the participate of a dancer Ela Mutiara
Networked music and dance performance
this a series networked music and dance performance based on improvisation. Each vollum had 2 events: live streaming and streaming (edited version) after the live stream one the week. We often found the idea from during our discussion about art and story about around us.
Vol 01 - Near and Far
The piece is Vol 01 in the networked improvisation between music and dance of 2x2WindowS.
It is a streaming version one week after the the live streaming performance.
Vol 02 - Far away, far away, over the heaving billows.
“Far away, far away, over the heaving billows” is the networked improvisation between music and dance of 2x2WindowS.
(“far hen! far hen over de svulmende vande!”- Hans Christian Andersen “Billedbog uden Billeder” -)
A dying nightingale sang like this for emigrant peasants in a heath.
Was it despair or hope?
Like emigrants crossing the ocean and seeking new lands, we embark on this online ocean.
Our new challenge begins now!
